Blog Tour Interview/Giveaway: Shrouded in Darkness by H.D. Thomson

Today I am so happy to announce and to be hosting this day for author H.D. Thomson's book blog tour for her novel Shrouded in Darkness! Thank you so much for doing the interview!

Tell us a little about yourself !

I would love to! I’ve had a hodge-podge of jobs, from staff accountant to pizza delivery person to owning an online bookstore and heading a company that does book covers, e-book conversions and web sites. Between all of that I’ve never stopped writing. It’s one of the pleasures that I have never been able to give up. That and reading.

Shrouded in Darkness is the first in your Shrouded Series. Can you tell us a little about it??

It’s about Jake, a man in search of an antidote to an experiment that is killing him. He thinks the formula is hidden in Margot’s house, across the country and miles away from Boston. When he shows up at her door, neither of them know a killer is following close behind and is after that same formula..

How was the writing process? Are you a visual writer or do the characters 'speak' to you?

I would say a character is speaking to me probably during two situations. One is when I’m doing something wrong and I’m not being true to who that character is. The other time is when I’ve put them in a predicament that they absolutely hate, which I guess if put it that way, they’re speaking to me a lot!

What was your favorite scene to write?

Almost every scene with Jake. I loved writing him. He’s just such a tormented soul, but at the same time I wanted to make sure he never gave up faith.

What was going through your mind when you enter your novel RWA Contest and after when it placed 1st??

Doubts are always hitting me when I submit to any contest. I always wonder if what I’m putting on page is any good. Then when I placed first, I’m so pleased that I am doing something right and what I’m putting out to the reader is worthy of their time.

What are 3 words you would use to describe Jake and Margot?

Tormented, lonely, and stubborn.

Did you know you always wanted to be a writer??

No, I actually didn’t even like to read until I snuck one of my sister’s gothic novels and read it. She always had a nose in a book, and my curiosity got the best of me. I thought there must be something really good in there because she hardly ever came up for air. I found out what I was missing. I’ve been hooked on reading ever since.

How many books are going to be in this series do you think??

There are two others. Shrouded in Mystery and Shrouded in Darkness. They’re completed but I still need to go through final edits to make sure they are polished enough. Each book is tied to the secretive and malignant pharmaceutical company, Miltronics.

Who has been your best or favorite character to write and why?

That is soooo hard to say. I loved Jake Preston because of how he dealt with all the obstacles I put him through. His faith in life was amazing. Then there’s Jake Davenport in Shrouded in Mystery. He’s a man who wakes up with amnesia and suspects he might by Clark Kent.

A la twitter style.. using only 140 characters, describe Shrouded in Darkness!!

Dark, sexy romance with a twisting plot. Guaranteed to lead you in a direction you never thought it would go.

Do you have any other projects coming up?

I’ve started another series which will be just as dark and also a novella, equally dark. I just don’t know how to write light and warm romances. I’ve tried, but they’ve never worked.

Who is your favorite Paranormal Romance Author? Any specific books or series?

This might sound strange but when Dean Koontz was writing under the name of Leigh Nichols. He had three books that were what I consider paranormal romance. Or at least they had very strong romantic elements. I fell in love with those books.

What is your favorite drink or food to have at a Party?!?!

Hmmm. When it comes to food and drink I’m afraid I’m not very discriminating! Let’s see, for drinks, I’d have to say my favorite is a butterscotch martini and as to food… Oh, shoot, that would have to be chocolate. I could have that for breakfast or dinner. The chocolate that is!

Blurb:
Jake Preston is on borrowed time. If he doesn’t stumble upon a miracle and soon, he’ll end up dead. And even if he does, he still might end up dead with a clever killer hounding his heels. He believes that the one miracle and antidote to save him is in Margot Davenport’s house, across the country and miles away from Boston. Somewhere locked in her home is the key to reversing an experiment that is killing him.
Margot doesn’t particularly care if she ends up dead. She’s lost everything she’s ever cared for. A divorce and the loss of her job as a corporate lawyer has left her with little faith in herself or in anyone else. Most importantly, she’s lost the one person on this earth she’s looked up to and cherished–her brother, Johnny. His death in a car accident has devastated her, and she can’t find the willpower to pull herself from the chasm she’s fallen into. Her only solace is at the bottom of a wineglass. Having moved back to the small town in northern Arizona where she was raised, she’s made a point of isolating herself both mentally and physically from everyone other than a few chosen friends. Little does she know that her life is going to explode into chaos.

Review:

1st line in the book---> Margot Davenport should never have opened the front door.

From the moment you begin to read this story, you are intrigued with the plot. Like a puzzle you are slowly putting the pieces of a big mystery. Author H.D. Thomson does a great job of keeping the reader guessing.

Margot Davenport has known tragedy. Having divorced her husband two years ago, losing her corporate career job and now suffering through the loss of her beloved brother Johnny. Margot is living a nightmare that she hasn't woken up from.

Jake Preston is also trapped in a living nightmare. Only his nightmare has one final end-Death. This is because of an experiment that backfired at a Pharmaceutical company he worked for. His only chance of survival is getting the antidote, which was last known to be in the hands of Johnny Davenport.

Not knowing of Johnny's passing, he shows up at Margot's house telling her he needs to speak to her brother. She tells him of the accident and allows Jake to stay in one of the rooms for him to rent. From there strange thing begin to happen. Margot begins to question the things Jake say, and later learns that truth of what who and what Jake is and how her brother brother's death was no accident.

Shrouded in Darkness is a great Paranormal Suspence novel. I loved Jake! If the hero is a tortured soul, and needs to find redemption. I enjoy it and Jake is just that. I also like the plot. It was fast-paced, thrilling with the romance element thrown into the mystery. There is a great balance of action and dialogue, it doesn't slow down. The only thing that will say is that Margot was a hard character to connect to. She is suffering through everything but for me, to keep referring to that just didn't help me sympathize with her. Instead I just got tired.

Overall I loved the story, plot, and the overall theme that this series will be taking. I am happy I was given a chance to read this novel and will be on the look out for the others in the series.

Fave Quotes:
"..I never meant for you to doubt yourself, but I didn’t see any other way to stop you. You were going to discover everything. I can’t let that happen. I can’t put you in any more danger, or myself.” -Jake

Something inside of him cracked. “You’re putting too much faith in me.”“If I don’t, then who will? You’ve lost all faith in yourself. That hope—that’s kept you going for so long is no longer there—in your heart.” She pressed her palm against his shirt and to the left of his chest.

  1. I loved this book and all it's twists. I'm so glad that there'll be two more in the series. Aside from the Clark Kent one, what is the other about?

  2. Hi, Linda. Thanks for asking! It's about a woman on the run to protect her son from a killer. The only person that can help her is a stranger who has the same strange powers like herself--the ability to move objects with her mind.

  5. Hi, Diana. Koontz republished them under his name. I believe they were The Vision, The Key to Midnight and Shadowfires. The gothic novel was Mary Stewart's My Brother Michael. I'm afraid that just dated me! :)
